One bet for the weekend

THERE’S not a whole pile of football on this weekend but we reckon we can still find value from the two games on – the Leinster and Connacht U-21 finals.

As we’ve said elsewhere we think Mayo will be too good for Sligo and 2/5 about Mayo with Paddy Powers yesterday looked okay but today they were into 1/5 so we shopped around and not only are Mayo a better price with Ladbrokes (1/3), so are Laois to beat Dublin (4/6 compared to 4/7 with Powers).

Laois are bursting with talent and have three of the best U-21s in the country in the shape of Donie Kingston (just out of minor), John O’Loughlin and Zach Tuohy. They’ve also lost a class act in Conor Meredith to Aussie Rules but they should have enough for an average enough Dublin side.

The combined bet is a little over even money so we’d collect 88euro for our 40euro bet. We were tempted to add Cork (plus eight points) at 10/11 to beat Kilkenny on the basis that the Rebels losing by that margin would be extremely embarrassing for the striking players but its hard to say that Kilkenny aren’t capable of beating anyone by that margin so we left well alone.

BOY WONDER: Laois had the original Boy Wonder in the great Tommy Murphy. Donal Kingston could well live up to that billing. Pictured here as a sixteen year old helping Laois to U-21 victory over Mayo in 2007, he should help a talented Laois side past Dublin today.
