Plenty of squad news for Mayo

WITH only one league game remaining for our senior footballers, it looks like John O’Mahony will have a full squad to select from for the trip to New York.

THE SAVAGE LOVES HIS NATIVE SHORE: Keith Higgins is leaving the freedom of Australia to return for another summer with Mayo footballers (and, presumably, hurlers).

THE SAVAGE LOVES THE NATIVE SHORE: Keith Higgins is leaving the freedom of Australia to return for another summer with Mayo footballers (and, presumably, hurlers).

James Nallen, David Heaney and Aidan Higgins returned last weekend, lining out in a challenge against Offaly on Saturday. However O’Mahony doesn’t expect to use any of the trio for Sunday’s game against Tyrone in this piece from The Mayo News.

And Keith Higgins is also due to return immenently according to the Independent which will leave it interesting to see how many defenders O’Mahony picks for his championship panel.

If we are to take the returning quartet as definites alongside Liam O’Malley, Ger Cafferkey, Trevor Howley, Kevin McLoughlin, Peadar Gardiner, Tom Cunniffe and Andy Moran, then that’s eleven players and there could be serious competition between Donal Vaughan, Chris Barrett, Kieran Conroy and Colm Boyle for whatever remaining panel places are left.

Time, as usual, will tell.

Also, those of you who can access a paper copy of The Mayo News should check out a profile by Mike Finnerty with the latest addition to the Mayo backroom team, sports psychologist Gerry Hussey from Galway. I can’t access it on the paper’s website but it gives a good background to a man who has already been well received in Team Mayo, having only met the players for the first time the night before the Kerry league game.

Hussey has been involved with the High Performance Boxing unit in Dublin and travelled to the 2008 Olympics, helping various Irish competitors. Some ‘smart-asses’ might say he has taken on his biggest challenge yet.
