Mayo Senior Panel for 2009 named

THIS one is hot off the press. The Mayo panel for the coming championship campaign has just been released and TIALTNGO has managed to procure a copy.

IN: Keith Higgins has made the Mayo championship panel.

IN: Keith Higgins has made the Mayo championship panel.

Veterans James Nallen and David Heaney together with the globe-trotting Keith Higgins have made the cut but there is no place for Aidan Higgins. Three players from the NFL panel lose out as well. Goalkeeper Robert Hennelly has time on his side with John O’Mahony clearly not intending to keep three ‘keepers involved while it’s probably not the same for Colm Boyle and Mickey Mullins.

Boyle was dropped after seeing little enough NFL game time (a late sub against Westmeath) which represents a fall from grace after starting last year’s Connacht final at corner-back. But, to be fair to Boyle, he was being played out of position in the corner and probably suffered for that.

While Boyle was a member of some Mayo squads during the NFL, Mickey Mullins, to my mind, wasn’t listed on any set of 24 which leads you to wonder why he was on the panel at all. Maybe O’Mahony was using training as a guide but the information I have to hand is the Claremorris forward was ‘flying’ in training.

He used today’s County League clash against Castlebar to demonstrate what Mayo might be missing – kicking 2-4. It’s hard to know if Mullins was good enough. But was he given a fair crack of the whip? Hardly.

Anyway the panel in full (in alphabetical order) is:

Chris Barrett (Belmullet),

Ger Cafferkey (Ballina),

David Clarke (Ballina),

Kieran Conroy (Shrule/Glencorrib),

Tom Cunniffe (Castlebar),

Alan Dillon (Ballintubber),

Peadar Gardiner (Crossmolina),

Patrick Harte (Ballina),

David Heaney (Swinford),

Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis),

Trevor Howley (Knockmore),

Barry Kelly (Ballagh’),

Aidan Kilcoyne (Knockmore),

Ronan McGarrity (Ballina),

Kevin McLoughlin (Knockmore),

Andy Moran (Ballagh’),

Barry Moran (Castlebar),

Conor Mortimer (Shrule/Glenocorrib),

Trevor Mortimer (Shrule/Glencorrib),

James Nallen (Crossmolina),

Austin O’Malley (St Vincent’s),

Kenneth O’Malley (Ballinrobe),

Liam O’Malley (Burrishoole),

Aidan O’Shea (Breaffy),

Seamus O’Shea (Breaffy),

Billy  Joe Padden (Belmullet),

Tom Parsons (Charlestown),

Mark Ronaldson (Shrule/Glencorrib),

Mikey Sweeney (Kiltane),

Donal Vaughan (Ballinrobe).

So the breakdown of the squad in terms of positions is: two goalkeepers, eleven specialised defenders, three specialised midfielders (McGarrity, S O’Shea and Parsons), four midfielders/forwards (B Moran, P Harte, B Kelly, A O’Shea) and one play anywhere player – Kieran Conroy. We have one defender/forward in Andy Moran and that leaves us with eight specialised forwards (we’re including Billy Padden in that, folly perhaps on our behalf).

The squad leaves us with good options in the half-back line (nothing new), midfield, half-forward line and full-forward. But the full-back line isn’t too well covered and nor is the inside line if Conor Mortimer isn’t available. We’ll discuss further later in the week.

if the re is such a thing as a play anywhere player that hs to be Billy joe he has already played full back centrehalf back midfiled all along the half forward line and full forward with hs briither being a very handy goalie maybe he could fill in there as well and complete the 1 to 15 which would be a unique achievement

i reckon he wold already hve
    jerseys 3,5,6,8,9,10,11,12, 13 ,14, 15 and maybe more

Billy Joe has seen more positions than David Heaney which is some achievement! Wing forward is his best position in my opinion but the fact that he’s not a guaranteed starter means he hasn’t been played there all the time. I don’t see him on the starting fifteen this year but you never know. I would have no issue with him starting mind.
