Lets get ready to rumble

Can you smell it? The sulphur in the air. A sure sign that the club championships are upon us. And I love nothing more than good oul club championship weekends. There is something altogether more personable about the club championship.

COME AN' 'AV A GO IF YOU THINK YOU'RE HARD ENUF!: Who can knock County Champions Ballaghaderreen of their perch this year? Or can anyone?

If you’re following or playing for your own club there is a special bond there that is not necessarily better than county but certainly different. If Mayo playing in Croker could be compared to Oasis playing at the O2, then your own club in your own field is like going to somewhere like the Roisin Dubh in Galway to watch Glen Hansaard play. The exclusivity of it makes it a privilege to be present or even involved.

And Mayo GAA’s own form of live acts in intimate venues is just over a week away. All over Mayo questions abound. Will Ballagh’ put back to back titles together? Have Crossmolina one more heave in them? Can Charlestown go one better after two final defeats in the last two years? And what has happened to Breaffy – meant to be this year’s coming team – who have lost five from five in the league?

And that’s before we look at the Intermediate championship. Can Westport bounce back to senior under the guidance of Martin Connolly and Shane Conway? Will Belmullet deliver on their potential? Swinford and Tourmakeady are interesting propositions.

With a nice run into the first round of championship games (although some have been put back to June 14 due to the Mayo Juniors playing the Connacht final on Sunday week) we’re going to use that time to assess each group day by day. We’ll start with Group A of the Senior championship tomorrow – Charlestown, Castlebar, Garrymore and Aghamore – and go through each of the  senior and intermediate groups day by day subsequently. We’ll have an overall look at the Junior championship and, dare I say it, we might see if we can right some of our betting wrongs this year by looking for some match value in the first round of games.

Come what may, and this sounds like a shameless newspaper ad, we’re the one stop shop for championship analysis! Watch this  space.
